Unorthodox Inspiration: Nick Blinko

Best known as the musical drive behind eccentric (and gloriously-twisted) British punk band Rudimentary Peni, Nick Blinko is also the artistic drive behind Peni’s album art. His schizophrenic drawings of faces, figures and obsessive patterns (almost literally—Blinko suffers from Schizoaffective Disorder and creates his work when off his meds; he also once believed himself to be Pope Adrian the 37th) are intensely dense and detailed, and easily distinguished by their disregard for formal composition.

Considered an outsider artist, Blinko’s work can (for the most part) only be obtained by purchasing Rudimentary Peni’s albums.

I’ve always been intrigued by Blinko’s art. It’s evidence of what a rich, disturbed and uninhibited imagination can create; and a testament to the importance of seeking out unorthodox and lesser-known art for inspiration.

Above is the cover art for Peni’s Death Church album, and below are more of Blinko’s works:

Monday Find: Scott Marr

This portfolio of fabulous surrealist drawings done by Scott Marr is featured on the Behance Network this morning. I’m not sure if he offers prints of his work but it’s certainly worth looking into. Simply amazing.

Monday Find

I literally just came across this packaging for Backyard vineyards, done by Barral Fabien. The intricate and beautiful detail in the custom typography and the illustrations floored me.

An explanation of the job and concept, as well as details of the actual label can be viewed here.
